This is going to be a somewhat shorter entry and I had meant to include some other themes from the countdown with it, but #6 is going to be pretty big. Now before I begin, I have to be clear. This is not about declaring which moment is “best”. This is simply about sharing love of Star Wars and revealing which moments are my favorites. It could be an entire scene, a line of dialogue, anything at all. So……

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

A New Hope. The very first Star Wars. This is a beloved movie, not just to Star Wars fans, but to fans of cinema in general. The American Film Institute rates Lucas’ first entry as the 13th greatest film of all time, and with good reason. Star Wars was something never attempted before. George Lucas’ brainchild was engaging, imaginative, innovative, and groundbreaking. In a stroke of brilliance (and partly out of necessity) George chose to start us off by dropping us right smack in the middle of his narrative with Episode 4. Blasting onto movie screens with that blaring John Williams fanfare and scrolling prologue that we have all come to know and love, A New Hope gave us our first look into a rich galaxy in turmoil, with unforgettable locations, characters, aliens, ships, factions, mythology, and so much more that we would need numerous articles to cover it all (our proposed 30 articles in this series would likely not be enough). Picking a favorite moment here was tough with so many iconic moments, great introductions, and epic set pieces to choose from.

For me, though, it has to be the assault on the Death Star. The Empire has tracked the Millennium Falcon to the Rebel base on the fourth moon of Yavin. The Rebels have identified a weakness in the battle station and scrambles the X-Wing fighters of Red Squadron and the Y-Wing Bombers of Gold Squadron in a desperate attempt to destroy the Death Star before it comes within firing range of the Rebel base. So much happens in the moments that follow including a frantic dogfight with Imperial TIE Fighters, the appearance of Darth Vader in his TIE Advanced fighter, and the infamous trench run. But my favorite moment is the Rebel starfighters as they form up for their assault and the X-Wings lock their S-foils into their signature “X” position. I feel like this is one of the scenes added in the special edition that really worked quite well. Those fighters just captured my imagination. I quickly became a great fan of the X-Wing and TIE Fighter combat flight simulator games by Lucasarts and memorized each ship class and their technical and combat capabilities. I have always been a big fan of the ships in the Star Wars universe, especially the fighters. I find this scene exciting and very gratifying as it gives us our first real good look at some Rebel starfighters. Who else is an X-wing fan? What is your favorite moment from Episode 4?
